WAC - Waterapplicatiecentrum
Jan en Ane Melein
"HydrowashR has rented facilities at the Waterapplicatiecentrum (WAC) to house the development of sustainable manual washing. Now that the accommodation is well taken care of, we can focus 100% on development."

Energy

Problems

The energy sector is searching for alternative ways to generate energy. Increasingly, we are seeing bio-based energy sources instead of fossil fuels. However, such biological processes use up a considerable amount of water. Re-use of this wastewater is a challenge. In both households and in industry, significant heat is lost via water that drains away. New technological concepts will have to be developed and evaluated for the integral
re-use of industrial heat waste and process water.

In addition, water itself can also be a source of energy. Certain minerals and methane and acetate are
extremely useful in power generation. Just as hydrogen.

Solutions

We can generate clean energy from water - by using the varying salt concentrations in salt water and freshwater, for example. The sludge that remains behind after treating wastewater is also rich in energy, even if we are currently capable of transforming only a small portion of that into electricity. One effective way of transforming organic matter into usable methane and hydrogen is through the use of bacteria.

WAC

The WAC provides electro-chemical equipment for research into (microbiological) fuel cells. You can also turn
to us for laboratory analyses. Using bacteria, our UASB reactor can transform organic matter into methane.
The Microbial Fuel Cell turns this into hydrogen. For experiments with electricity derived from salt water and freshwater, we can support you with Reverse Electro Dialysis.
